A number of events were held over the half term for our Junior members at Kilkeel Golf Club. This kicked off on Friday 28th October with a Prize-giving and Halloween disco which was very well attended. Our Captain, Gerard Murphy and Lady Captain, Florence Sloane extended a warm welcome and invitation to all, and expressed their appreciation to all the organisers. Prizes were then presented for 1st, 2nd & 3rd by the Captain for all Juniors who had competed in the Saturday competitions. The trophy was presented to Stephen by the Lady Secretary, Mrs Maire McKibben. A very big thank you is extended to all who helped sponsor the evening and to all the parents for their help and support throughout the year. Special thanks must also go to our new PGA professional Mr Jerry Scullion who has also made a major contribution towards the Junior Section On Monday 31st October we had a Junior Open competition for the Michael Trainor (Jnr) Memorial Shield. All fundamentals were checked for each Junior and each given a lesson summary on how to move their game forward. Special thanks to our Hon Secretary,Mr Carson McBride who helped support this event. Weekly Notes

In the recent gents stroke competition sponsored by Phillips Financial Planning, Chris Gordon was the winner with a fantastic score of nett 61. Chris, playing off a handicap of 17, got off to a steady start and a birdie at the 8th hole helped him to an outward nine that was five shots better than his handicap. It was a case of more of the same on the way home as another birdie on the 15th hole helped him cover the back nine in only 38 strokes which left him out on his own in first place. Second place went to Sean Leneghan (17) who was a shot further back with a nett 62, the highlight of his round being a birdie at the 15th hole. Michael Poland (12) just missed out on second place on the countback, he also had a score of nett 62 which included birdies at the 4th, 8th and 18th holes. Winner of the gross prize was Eddie McDowell, who had birdies at the 1st, 5th and 6th holes on his way to a round of 74.

The gents competition on Saturday past was sponsored by the club and it was tight at the top of the leaderboard with the winner only being decided after a countback of the scores over the last three holes. Ronan Kearney (11) & Gareth Russell (8) both had 41 points. Gareth has four birdies in his round but was undone by a double bogey at the last whereas it was Ronan’s consistency that won the day as his par at the last meant that he pipped Gareth to first place. Robert Stewart (5) was third with 40 points which included birdies at the 1st and 7th holes. Sean Ross was the winner of the gross prize with a round of 70. He got off to a flyer and mixed birdies at 1, 5 and 6 with six pars to hit the turn at three under, 8 eight pars and a bogey coming home gave him a great score of two under par.

Northern Bank were the sponsor of this weeks gents competition and there was a runaway winner as Cyril O’Sullivan left the field trailing in his wake. Cyril, playing off a handicap of 26, got off to a flyer with birdies at the 1st and 3rd holes and was 2 under par after five holes. He hit the turn with an amazing 27 points and only had to coast home from there to secure victory. Cyril could even afford to take it easy on the last hole as this was his only dropped shots of the day as he added another 21 points on the back nine to finish up with a fantastic score of 48 points. Second place went to Alan Henning (10) who also got off to a flyer with 26 points on the front nine, the highlights being birdies at the 3rd, 8th and 9th holes. He had a back nine of 19 points to give hime 45 points which on any normal Saturday would have given him victory. Dessie Boden (14) was third with 42 points. Dessie had 22 points on the front nine and 20 points coming home, the highlight of his round was a birdie at the 3rd hole as he put together a very steady round of golf. Winner of the gross prize was that man again, William Hanna, who had birdies at the 5th, 12th and 15th holes in a round of one under par 71.
